 Spiders and Flies

Picture
Picture
I have always loved spiders and their webs. People who have visited my home have noticed web sculptures, clocks and other decorative items in evidence; these often solicit a double take. (Not everyone likes spiders!) I have also used spider webs for quilting patterns; they are so easy and you don't have to mark anything except the horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. Pure pleasure to sew!

However, I have never been a fan of flies until I started photographing them. I was absolutely amazed at the iridescent colours of the bodies and wings, the huge compound eyes and the bristles! You can't actually see these things except in a macro photo. Sometimes, when I uploaded photos onto my computer, I would actually cry out in amazement at what I saw. They are really other-worldly creatures. This gave me the idea to study them, and you can read the outcome of my research in the following article, which was published in The Henley Standard on 5 November 2021.
