I am cutting back on speaking engagements in general, and especially those that mean I'll have to drive some distance from my home, especially in the evenings. I'm happy to talk to groups local to me or at large Regional events or Festivals.

These are the talks that are available:

Choosing the Best Category for Your Quilt

When entering your work in an exhibition or judged show, it can be difficult to choose the perfect category. What is the difference between an Art Quilt and a Contemporary one, and how do these differ from Pictorial Quilts? Should you be thinking about entering an entirely different category to give your quilt the best chance of being noticed? This talk features the work of over 35 textile artists who are making exciting quilts in a variety of styles. An experienced judge, Linda will explain what an art quilt is, and illustrate how it differs from a contemporary and a pictorial quilt by comparing examples of similar styles and designs. By the end of the talk you should be able to differentiate between the categories so you can better decide where to enter your quilt in a show.

Surface Design and Embellishments for Quilters

Surface Design and embellishments are taking today's quilts to new heights of intricacy and appeal.  This talk features 35 quilts that have been enhanced  through the use of surface design or embellishments. Each technique will be closely examined to see how it complements the quilt on which it was used. We will examine dyeing, slashing, stamping, stencilling, screen and mono printing as well as discharging, foiling and rusting. Acid etching will be explained as will marbling, snow dyeing and cyanotype. We will also see how Angelina fibres can be used on quilts, as well as metal, machine and hand embroidery, thread painting, couching, beading and bobbin work. Detailed close-ups will provide a good understanding of each technique and how it might enhance your own work.

Contemporary and Modern Art Quilters

This talk features the work of over 35 textile artists who are making exciting Contemporary and Modern art quilts. Linda will define what a Modern quilt is, and illustrate how it differs from a Contemporary quilt by comparing examples of similar styles/designs. By the end of the talk you'll be able to differentiate between them quite easily. Photographs and detailed close-ups will explore the diversity of work being created today by both types of quilters.

Quilts: From Utility to Art

This lecture defines what a quilt is and essentially, how one is made. Three distinct sections of the talk show the different traditional styles (patchwork, appliqué, wholecloth) and demonstrate how these basic styles have gradually developed into textile art over the years. The slide talk features antique quilts as well as the exciting work of over 30 contemporary quilt artists. The photographs and detailed close-ups illustrate the diversity of work that can be achieved using textiles and other media. Many of the tools and techniques that contemporary quilt artists are using as they create work that is imaginative, artistic and unique are explained. Unless travel restrictions apply, some examples of both antique and art quilts will be shown at the end of the talk.

The Creation of a Quilt Book

Journey with Linda on a 3-year odyssey as you hear the story of how she researched and wrote her quilt book, The Ultimate Guide to Art Quilting. This is the chronicle in words, illustrations and photographs about how the book was created. See how photographs and stick-figure drawings were turned into clear step-by-step illustrations, as if by magic. Get a behind-the-scenes look at how ideas develop, and how a book is designed. Learn some art quilt techniques as you see how the pages grew from concept to reality. Experience the thrill of finding just the right quilts to feature in the book, and examine some of these beautiful pieces in detail. This talk will give a fascinating insight into how this quilt book was written from start to finish, and will introduce you to some gorgeous art quilts and the techniques used to make them.

Ultimate Quilt Artists

The beautiful art quilts produced today have certainly travelled a long way from their modest beginnings as utilitarian bed coverings. This talk will feature the exciting work of over 40 of the quilt artists featured in Linda’s latest book, The Ultimate Guide to Art Quilting. The photographs will illustrate the diversity of work that art quilters have achieved, and the author will discuss many of the tools and techniques that contemporary quilt artists are using as they create work that is imaginative, quirky and unique.
