 Japanese Ladies

2016           112 x 128cm/44 x 50 inches

Materials and Technique: cotton fabric, Easy Stack patchwork, taught by Paula Doyle, machine stitches, longarm machine quilted

Paula Doyle taught me her “Easy Stack” technique which entails lining up four layers of fabric exactly, cutting it into squares, then swirling the squares to create a kaleidoscopic effect. It is very addictive and fun to do, and the result looks much more complicated than it is. This quilt is actually featured in her book!

April Wedding

2017           94 x 85cm/37 x 33 ½ inches

Materials and Technique: cotton fabrics, machine pieced, raw edge appliqued, machine quilted,  embellished with beads

This was made to celebrate the wedding of my nephew Jimmy Macho to Melissa and given to them at their wedding breakfast the following day. I creating it with the crazy curve patchwork method using traditional Javanese batik edged with glittering gold and silver. Cloth such as this is worn and displayed at weddings and other special ceremonial occasions. I thought it appropriate for a wedding quilt, and it does sparkle in the sun or when light is shining on it.

Tony’s Quilt
2017                  78cm/31 inches square

Materials and Technique: silk ties, embroidery; machine stitched, machine quilted borders, hand embroidered

My dear friend Anthoney Marchese was killed by a car on October 5th, 2015. When I met his sister Kathy the following summer, she gave me a selection of his ties and I said I'd make a quilt for her. I decided on a Crazy Quilt as Tony and I had some pretty crazy times together. While working I listened to music that Tony and I had loved—The Boss (Bruce Springsteen), and Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Meatloaf, ELP, The Doors....I felt as if Tony was beside me having a beer and it made me happy to spend that time with him. I embroidered over the seams by hand which was a slow, gentle way to remember a life well lived. I presented the quilt to Kathy when I visited the States during the summer of 2017. She has hung in her home and it will provide happy memories of her brother, my friend. I feel it’s a fitting tribute to his life and I know she will treasure it. Perhaps it will eventually go to the nephew he never knew. That’s the thing about quilts: they tell a story that will last for generations. To honour someone's life in the form of a quilt is a wonderful way to remember, help others to remember and soothe a grieving heart.

 Jack of All Seasons

2018
         76 x 104cm/30 x 41 inches

Materials and Technique: cotton fabric—commercial and hand-dyed, inkjet printed photos, free-motion machine quilting, hand and machine embroidery, embellished with beads

This quilt is the culmination of a year of contemporary journal quilts on the theme of stitching through the seasons, with a focus on my dog Jack. Each block took a full month to complete. All images were original photos, printed on fabric, then thread-painted, embroidered, quilted and embellished with beads.

Jack's Wedding Bed

I made this bed for Jack to rest in during my daughter's wedding in May. (We chose the venue for the reception because they allowed dogs to be there.) I bought the foam dog bed form from Lady Sew & Sew in Henley, and used Paula Doyle's Easy Stack method to make the blocks.

Jack enjoyed having a respite in his bed from all his admirers during the wedding. I also made a couple of lavender sachets for him so he could relax fully while he slept (seen in the top image).
